Independence of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka was under foreign rule for many years. First, the Portuguese came to the country in 1505. After them, the Dutch ruled some parts of Sri Lanka. Later, the British took control of the whole country in 1815. During this time, Sri Lankan people did not have freedom to govern their own country. Many national leaders worked hard to gain independence. They used peaceful methods and political discussions to achieve their goal. Finally, Sri Lanka gained independence from the British on 4th February 1948. It was a very proud and important day for the people of Sri Lanka. After independence, Sri Lanka became a free nation. The country began to develop its own government and policies. Every year, Sri Lankans celebrate Independence Day with pride. There are parades, cultural events, and national celebrations. The national flag is raised to remember the freedom of the country. Independence reminds people about the sacrifices of national heroes. It also encourages citizens to protect the freedom and unity of the nation.
